  • Essay / Carbon tax versus cap and trade - 1287

“Across the world, in every type of environment and region known to man, increasingly dangerous weather and devastating storms are abruptly ending to the long-standing debate over whether climate change is real or not. Not only is it real, it is here, and its effects are giving rise to a frightening global phenomenon: man-made natural disasters.” BARACK OBAMA, speech, April 3, 2006. Climate change is not a theory as many people believe and is in fact confirmed by major scientific agencies such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. (NASA) in the United States. The causes of global warming are mainly due to greenhouse gases which are trapped in the atmosphere and cause the depletion of the earth's ozone layer. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and although it is a necessary component of our atmosphere because it helps plants carry out photosynthesis, too much causes the ozone layer to deplete and therefore climate change. Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere increased significantly after the industrial revolution, indicating that the major cause of this problem is due to anthropogenic activities. The question presented in this article is how to aim to reduce the quantities released and what is the best solution. there are ways to solve this problem. This question has long been debated among scientists, businessmen, industrial owners and politicians, as well as many other prominent figures in society. The four main approaches to reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere include: alternative energy subsidies, cap and trade, carbon taxes, and mandatory regulation. We will examine and compare the effectiveness of two of these methods: Carb...... middle of paper ......global-carbon-emissions>.5. Plumer, Brad. "Europe's cap-and-trade program is in trouble.
