  • Essay / Renaissance period during the 1920s - 771

The 1920s were a period of renaissance for the country. They managed to end World War I and rapid changes began to appear for businesses and citizens as they tried to improve their way of life. The old ways prevalent in America were changing and people were trying to change their usual customs. However, despite the success of the era, many began to attribute their problems and hardships, such as crime, death, and poverty, to alcohol and immigrants coming to America to improve their lives. Many cultural conflicts, including Prohibition, the KKK, nativism, the Harlem Renaissance, and bootlegging, emerged, changing the conditions of the country and leading to various positive and negative consequences. Alcohol has become more and more popular over the years. People used it to escape from reality and for recreational purposes. Ultimately, this caused problems for many families and businesses. Women who passionately opposed alcohol consumption formed the temperance movement. They believed that alcohol caused ills to societies, such as crime, murder, and fraud. Instead of husbands using the money they earned for their family, food, and education, they wasted it on alcohol made in Germany. At the time, Germany, America's enemy, was generally despised by America. Americans were therefore any Germany if they bought beer; this meant that they were supporting the enemy's economy. Across the country, people realized that changes needed to happen to improve their way of life. After much controversy, legislation passed the 18th Amendment, the prohibition of alcohol. The amendment...... middle of paper ...... nativists weren't the only ones who hated foreigners. The newly formed KKK was fundamentally anti everything it was not. They hated anyone who wasn't Anglo-Saxon. The power of the KKK and nativists has had a major impact on the expansion of diversity in America. The two powers united prevented different races and cultures from entering the country. Originally, immigrants came to fill the vacant jobs of soldiers fighting in the war, but the United Forces believed they had no place on American soil. While the results of the Harlem Renaissance were positive and created a comfortable living experience for African Americans, the results of the actions of the KKK and nativists had a negative impact on immigrants who aspired to come to America. These cultural conflicts of the 1920s made life easier for some, while they made life more difficult for others..
