Is love at first sight real? According to “Your Tango,” “nearly fifty-eight percent of Americans believe love at first sight is real. Moreover, fifty percent of Americans say they have experienced it themselves” (Behan). The controversy over whether or not a couple can fall in love quickly can be debated. However, the truth about love is that it can happen in a split second. With evidence from the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, it is proven that love at first sight does indeed exist. Love at first sight is possible because Romeo and Juliet showed strong feelings towards each other from the moment they crossed paths, and they did everything for their love, including committing suicide to be together forever. Love at first sight is possible because Romeo and Juliet were very affectionate immediately after meeting. For example, when Romeo first saw Juliet, he exclaimed: "Has my heart loved until now?" Give up sight! / For I never saw true beauty until this night. (IV54-55).” Romeo wonders if he has ever truly loved anyone before this time. He also states that he has never seen true beauty before. This proves that Romeo fell in love with Juliet the moment he first saw her without even speaking to her. Additionally, right after Juliet meets Romeo, she says, "My only love, born of my only hatred!" (IV147).” Two scenes before, Juliette declared to her mother and her nurse that she did not feel ready to marry and that she did not yet want to marry Paris. However, after Juliet sees Romeo, she instantly falls in love with him and admits that she wants to marry him. Furthermore, the night following the meeting of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo risks his life to go see his love again.
