  • Essay / Feudalism and manorialism - 614

During the Middle Ages, a lot of suffering and decentralization had occurred. There are many reasons why this happened and the solutions to these growing conflicts were feudalism and manorialism. But why were these ideologies used or provoked? The reasons for the emergence of medieval feudalism and manorialism are political, social decentralization and economic problems that arose during and after the demise of the Roman Empire, invasions of barbarians, rise of barbarian kingdoms, civil wars within barbarian kingdoms and the need for stability and security that made the people of that time desperate. Medieval feudalism arose from the political disorder left by the end of the Roman Empire as well as the invasions and rise of barbarian empires like the Carolingians. All these barbarian invasions had caused kingdoms to grow for these invaders. One of the many barbarian kingdoms are the Carolingians. This empire had tried many tactics to create a stable system within the country, but the civil wars had not allowed it to create political stability. So, like the Roman Empire, the Carolingian Empire had to be divided and nothing improved. Feudalism was the only political stability that could be used because all the factors had accumulated there. The social reason was that kings were weakening and nobles were gaining authority because they had all the elements that attracted the people who lived in the disaster lands of Western Europe. Manorialism could be caused by the same factors as feudalism, but it appears to be caused by economic influence. Trade was in decline and without trade the land and people would perish and collapse as nothing supports the economy. The two distinctive systems were the solutions to the problems that arose in the Middle Ages. Works Cited Mckay, John, Bennett Hill, John Buckler, Clare Haru Crowston and Merry Wiesner-Hanks.
