A cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps individuals develop a sense of sound. This device provides direct electrical stimulation to the auditory nerve in the individual's inner ear. Generally, people who are deaf or hard of hearing use this device. This device consists of external and internal parts placed behind an individual's ear and a second part surgically placed under the skin. Cochlear implants give individuals the ability to make sounds that those with perfect hearing can benefit from. Interest in electrical methods that stimulate hearing emerged in the late 18th century. Alessandro Volta discovered the electrolytic cell. An electrolytic cell is a cell that operates on a chemical system by passing an electric current through the system. Volta was the first to stimulate the hearing system by connecting a paste of thirty or forty couples to two metal rods inserted into his ears. Once the circuits were finished, Volta had the feeling of “a jolt in the head”. The translation of this phrase means “a boom in the head”. Several other scientists began experimenting with creating their own hearing systems. In 1971, William House and Jack Urban worked together to perfect the cochlear implants we know today.
