  • Essay / The Scarlet Ibis Paper - 595

When I read “The Scarlet Ibis,” a driving passion for success comes to mind. This non-fiction book written by James Hurst is about a boy's determination that can be pushed because he is ashamed of his brother. “The Scarlet Ibis” is a book about a boy unhappy with his disabled brother Doodle. Brother pushes Doodle to achieve his goals, but is he pushing him too far? Brother doesn't want to be known as the disabled child, so he teaches him to do everything a normal person can do. When Brother teaches Doodle to walk at Old Women Swamp, it marks Brother's determination to teach. Doodle to walk, but is it because he is not a crippled brother. “Every day that summer we went to the pine tree by the creek of Old Women Swamp, and I stood it up at least a hundred times every afternoon” (Hurst 112), just so brother wouldn't have no infirm brother. When I think of someone trying to teach someone something and taking every day of the summer, that's what I call determination. Unfortunately, Brother is not doing this for Doodle but for himself. This is why Old Women Swamp marks Brother’s determination. He wants to teach Doodle to walk but at the same time he just doesn't want a weird brother. Brother: “From the beginning it seemed so hopeless that it was a miracle I didn’t give up” (Hurst 110). Doodle's desperation is no match for Brother's determination to overcome the challenges Doodle faces, even if it is for himself. When I think of a swamp I think of green water and a bad place, but in the story it is used to show the place where Doodle learns to walk. Just like a swamp can be a fun place, it can also be a bad place where bad things can happen. The cart may symbolize Brother helping Doodle, but also shows Brother pushing Doodle too far so he doesn't have to jostle him. Brother “I'll teach you to walk Doodle... Why?... so I don't have to drag you around all the time” (Hurst 112). Brother is only trying to help Doodle, but because pushing him around is a nuisance. Doodle is so dependent on the cart that when Brother takes it away, he denies he can do without it..
