    After that, the milkman told them about their neighbor's daughter's marriage. The narrator's family considered their neighbor's daughter's weeding an ordinary holiday celebration because they did not know any kind of wedding traditions like fanfare, tumult, or party (138). The narrator's family watched the bride wear a sari and carry a coconut. The girl did not show any sort of empress, although her mother kissed her warmly and her father patted her head (139). Moreover, the girl could not shed any tears. The narrator's mother was surprised that the girl was not crying and said that "the girl had become hardened by her upbringing and had no real love or attachment for her mother and father" (139). Also, the narrator's father questioned and said, “The old times are over and the hearts of men have become a machine” (139). All the family members of the narrator were shocked as they could not realize any feeling on the part of the parents towards the absence of their daughter.
