  • Essay / The Symbolist Movement - 1041

The Symbolist movement first distinguished itself in literature (Boston College). It was only later that the art was recognized as symbolist. According to Hardy in his lecture, “Symbolism is a literary movement – primarily poetic, internally focused, and connected to words that reflect reality.” Jean Moréas wrote the Symbolist Manifesto in 1886 (Boston College). Boston College states: “Symbolism was an idealistic movement, created by artists dissatisfied with their culture. » The symbolists suggested their meanings. They didn't want to say frankly what they wanted to say. They thought words weren't enough (Hardy). Since the symbolists believed that words were insufficient, they used symbolic allusions to convey their messages to the reader. Symbolist beliefs and literary techniques are what Symbolist poets used to distinguish their literary movement from all other movements before his time. Symbolist poets considered language insufficient to truly capture reality; therefore, they used symbolic allusions to recreate reality (Hardy). Symbolic allusions are constructions of symbols that express what is seen or felt (Hardy). Hardy says that symbolists also like to use synesthesia in their poems; synesthesia is the use of language typically associated with one type of imagery to describe a different type of imagery. It was these techniques that helped the symbolists get their message across. Symbolist poets had virtually no boundaries when writing their poems. Symbolist poetry often included some type of explicit material or allusion. It was unlike any major literary movement before. Before this literary movement, the word "nose" was not even supposed to be used in poetry, but Baudelaire uses expressions like "piss des foutaises" and "lecherou...... middle of paper... . ..... step down the boundaries that were put in place by the Enlightenment thinkers, the Romantics and all other generations before them. They broke these boundaries through the verboten language and literary techniques they used. The Symbolists used these things in a way that had never been done before. The Symbolists used these literary techniques to express their unique beliefs. The literary techniques and beliefs of the Symbolists are what set the movement apart from all others.
