  • Essay / Reality Check - 962

Is the life we live every day real, or are we stuck in a world where we are told what to do but we don't really know? Or can we actually function on our own? As the puppeteers create images on the wall of a cave in the short story "The Allegory of the Cave," the prisoners believe only that this is the real world; Little do they know that there is much more to life than being chained in one place watching shadows all their lives. The Matrix, produced by Joel Silvers, takes the same aspects of the short story of whether the world they live in day to day is real by following a computer simulated game. While both entertaining pieces depict multiple similarities, such as a world drawn to your eyes or controlled by others, each presents distinct differences as to what is actually true of this so-called world. “The Allegory of the Cave” confronts a vision of modern constraints in people's daily lives. Plato describes how all the prisoners are chained by the legs and head, forced to look at the wall of the cave where they watch shadows cast and hear noises in which they believe that "the truth would literally be only the shadows of the images" (Plato p2). . Chains can represent the limitations of everyday life today. There are so many regulations and rules imposed on us by the government that we really can't control our own lives. The majority of the human race seems to believe that the government always makes the best decisions for the country. Other limitations due to chains include money problems, illness and lack of food for the family. Another quality exhibited is sunlight which represents truth. When a prisoner “turns his neck, walks and looks towards the light, he will suffer sharp pain; the glass...... middle of paper ......ve; however, they do not believe that there is another world and only neglect the man who is trying to tell them the real truth. Two different works are closely related because they feature many comparisons as to whether the world we live in is true or not. As we look back at "The Allegory of the Cave" and the Matrix, the scripts share a wide variety of comparisons that people believe our daily lives are uncontrolled. In contrast, one piece depicts humans trapped in a cave to believe that all the shadows they saw were real; the other is a futuristic computer game controlling their lives. Either way, imagine living in a world where you are computer generated without knowing that there is more to it than control. What if you were stuck in one place since you were born and unable to make decisions for yourself until you died ??
