  • Essay / The Contrasting Personalities of Jack and Ralph - 854

Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, tells the story of a group of British boys stranded on an island who must work to save themselves. A fictional “beast” is embedded in their minds and they live in fear. Conflict arises due to the power struggle between two leaders, leading to chaos and the separation of the group. They become savages physically and spiritually and eventually give in to evil, losing their innocence and causing their limbs to die. Ralph and Jack lead by two different methods: fear and democracy, and have different priorities; hunting and rescue which they have different means to make it a reality. Ralph's ultimate goal is rescue, and it is through his restoration of order that the boys remain temporarily sane. For example, when Ralph first finds the conch, he intends to blow it to call and organize an assembly of the boys. This characterizes Ralph as a logical leader who leads through regulation. This shows the importance of organization to Ralph, it is the way a leader should think, caring about all his colleagues. Additionally, he starts building shelters after a while on the island so that they can protect themselves from the high heat or rain on the island. Shelter is one of the basic necessities of life and Ralph's action of building them shows his commitment and hope to survive until they can be rescued. Additionally, during their first meeting, Ralph suggests lighting a fire so that if ships pass by, they can see the smoke, as a sign of life. This is important because it shows Ralph's priority in saving. This also shows that Ralph rules not only by order, but also with respect. He wants the other boys to obey his orders, not by force, but because they respect him, as they should do with their...... middle of paper...... which represents Jack's leadership style best because they both represent evil, cause chaos and fear, and derive some satisfaction from it. Golding's message in the novel was that humans are evil and have a tremendous capacity for destruction. He conveys this point through dialogue and the actions of the various characters and the events caused by the boys. After Golding's war experiences, he saw the deaths of millions of innocent people everywhere, which influenced him to write this novel. His idea of humanity is that they are all bad and those who are good die or the ideas they believe in and try to spread die. I agree with Golding's idea because of the countless events in history and the present, such as genocides and mass shootings, that show the evil in humans outweighing the good in others.
