  • Essay / Water Crisis: California Drought - 1047

On March 27, 2014, Wade Graham of the San Francisco Chronicle reported "The Water Revolution California Needs." California is experiencing a severe drought. Wade Graham tells his readers that California is facing a serious water crisis. The state of California must make strict changes to how water is distributed to farmers and residents. Before California's entire ecological system is destroyed. Wade Graham believes the price of water should be higher; this way people don't waste water. Water is a limited resource that should never be wasted and is probably California's most valuable resource. Unfortunately, many people waste water; instead of saving water, especially when we live in the state of California where we are prone to many droughts. Wade Graham tells his readers how farmers receive water subsidies; Yet farmers are not updating their methods of watering their crops. By not using efficient ways to water their crops, farmers are wasting tons of our natural water resources. The cost of wasting water harms our ecological system; by drying up all of California’s lakes and rivers; not to mention that it also affects animals. Wade Graham says California should follow Australia's lead on water conservation; because they have similar climates. Australia distributes its water for public needs; they removed all water subsidies. The Australian government has purchased all water rights to improve water efficiency; Australians have converted water rights into what they call “shares” so that water can be used only when needed. Although Australia has cut spending, even during its worst drought, the country continues to function well. The underlying reason for these developments... middle of paper ...... their water subsidies and tax breaks should be removed, until they are ready to comply with the new laws on water efficiency. I believe drip irrigation, xeriscaping, water recycling, and conservation are great ways to help keep California beautiful, prosperous, and protect us from future megadroughts. Desalination is another interesting alternative that, in my opinion, is reserved for extreme measures when we have run out of all other ingenious options. If Californians don't act quickly, we could ruin the great state of California. California is also one of the most productive states in the country for fruits, nuts, vegetables and dairy products; Without California, our nation's food supply would be significantly reduced and food costs would increase across the country. Not all living things can survive without water; this is why it is important to conserve our most precious natural resource, water..
