  • Essay / Technology vs. Society: The role of technology and society

From my experience of technology, both here at UL and also from my time spent in post-primary and primary school, particularly the technology associated with society, the relationship that exists between the two factors is very complex, perhaps too complex to even separate one from the other. Once I took this module a few weeks later, I began to question the relationship that exists and the fact that without technology, society would be totally fragile and would eventually collapse. We must also ask ourselves if, without a society like the one we live in today, would technologies be able to thrive as they do? Is the demand for technology in society driving its growth or is technology influencing society and what it will become? We need to take all of these varying factors into account when questioning the role of technology and society, as it could be said that they are interdependent on each other. As we now see that technology and society are to some extent interdependent on each other, we must ask ourselves what exactly is technology. According to the program, “technology can be represented as one of the ways in which society meets its needs and solves many of its problems.” Black and Harrison, in their 1994 publication, seemed to agree, stating that "technology was relied upon, when practical solutions to problems were needed." (Black and Harrison, 1994, p. 13) These two references suggest that technology is here to help us, helping us solve the problems of our daily lives. However, we need to question these practical solutions based on what are the problems? And also, who is creating these problems? One could say that it is society as a whole that creates these problems which then creates a niche for these new technologies...... middle of paper ...... experiential learning rather than the method of simply reminding information that has been a method used in the past. Numeracy and literacy skills in this country are also very low, and there is a major need for improvement in society in this regard. Today's society demands this. What also struck me about the new framework was the quality of the evaluation. The framework states that students will be more accountable than currently in generating advertisements that present evidence of their own learning. Here, technology and society are constantly integrated, as reports suggest that students leave school too dependent on teachers and not very accustomed to thinking for themselves. Society demands that self-understanding be encouraged from an early age, so that the graduates produced are of a higher standard and equipped with independent thinking..
