  • Essay / Sexual and Violent Advertising - 854

Advertisers have many subtle ways to present advertisements to sell products, but many of these advertisements can go far beyond selling products. Advertisements involving purple sex scenes may actually send subliminal messages that violence is acceptable. Looking at these ads, it's not hard to see that they have a deeper meaning than just selling a product. With sexual and violent advertising, we may even be able to say that rape, sexual assault and violence are alive and thriving in our society. Many Americans and Europeans are desensitized by the multitude of violent advertisements. Today's advertisements that carry vivid portraits of women being attacked, killed or even abused have given a whole new meaning to violence against women through advertising. Duncan Quinn's advert sells suits and ties...who are men who hate women for? At first glance, the ad shows a black and white photo of a lifeless, half-naked woman draped over a car, with the strong indication that she was strangled with a tie. The tie is held by a smiling and satisfied man, standing near the car, who is holding the tie that is around the woman's neck. The man who is considered dominant appears in the image superior to women. The black and white portal of the ad was not a mistake; this helps contrast the lifeless woman across the car wearing only a white bra and underwear. Women's white clothes are made to stand out more against the black background. The black background gives an ominous feel to the ad, leading the viewer to believe that it is now part of a dark secret. According to Fowles, this ad could fall into two categories of the... newspaper environment... daily litany of news about women being raped, beaten and killed. This doesn't mean it's any more acceptable to make light of violence and sexual assault against women in advertising. In the controversial ads Duncan Quinn, Relish and A Victim of Beauty all showed blatant disregard for women in today's society. These ads capitalized on very serious issues for women in society simply to sell a product. Advertisers use female victims of violence as a shock tactic to attract viewers to advertising. These advertisers ignored the unleashed agents of war, the epidemic of violence, rape, murder and assault plaguing most parts of the world. The main link in the advertisements is violence against women, thus telling society that it is acceptable to abuse, molest and rape women. How to discourage violence against women when advertisements encourage it?
