  • Essay / A Case Study of a Second Grade Student - 1513

For this assignment, I had the pleasure of working with the same student that I worked with for the first assignment. My student is in second grade and I will call him JR. Working with JR, I evaluated her using four different assessments and really got to understand her as a learner. This assignment was different from the first assignment because I was able to delve deeper into her literacy knowledge and was able to identify many of her strengths and needs. I feel like I understand JR better because I now know her personally and educationally. JR is seven years old and lives in an apartment with his mother, brothers, aunt and cousins. She enjoys cycling outside, watching TV and reading fashion magazines. Fashion and design are her two main passions. JR will read any book or magazine if it is about fashion or design. JR also expressed her dream of becoming a hairdresser, just like her mother. However, JR isn't as enthusiastic about reading as he is about fashion. Reading is simply reading to him. At school she prefers to learn a different subject and at home she prefers to ride a bike. She has expressed several times that she only likes to read if the material is fashion based or if the book is a Fly Guy book. The Fly Guy books are his favorite. However, JR said she enjoyed reading with her friends at school and enjoyed answering questions because it made her feel like a movie star. So, presenting and interacting with others is something she enjoys doing and feels comfortable in the classroom. This time my interaction with JR was more education based. I wanted to get to know her as a learner and see where...... middle of paper ......e they can master another part. JR still hasn't mastered some basic parts of spelling, like identifying digraphs and blends; as a result, she has difficulty pronouncing complex sight words and spelling words. It is important for teachers to ensure that students understand the basics before moving on to more complex aspects. For JR to succeed in the future, she needs to go back and learn the basics. The moment when students learn to read and write is one of many crucial moments in their educational journey. Works CitedBear, D., Templeton, S., et al.
