    In the short story “Sugar,” Sharon Leach demonstrates the parallel between the protagonist's sexual desires and her need to provide for her poor family. From the first line, the main character, Sugar, reveals her innermost erotic desires by describing “the girl in the leopard print bikini” (170). Sugar's subsequent actions prove rational to "keep [his] mother, sisters, and brothers fed and clothed for a while" (178). Vivid imagery, the pattern of dismissal, and first-person narration allow Leach to highlight human tendencies in sexual behavior while observing the importance of earning a living to support one's family and eventually afford oneself the products that make Sugar the envy of hotel guests. the images used give this story a lot of depth as they bring Sugar's encounters to life in the reader's mind.
