  • Essay / Honor killing - 1094

According to Webster's dictionary, honor killing is "the traditional practice in some countries of killing a family member suspected of having brought shame to the family." Honor killings take place all over the world, even in contemporary societies. Britain is a society that still participates in honor killings. According to a Newsweek article, a father killed his fifteen-year-old daughter. She was rumored to have started dating a secret boyfriend, and after the family found out, a family council decided that death was the best option. There are many stories similar to this one. The tradition of honor killings goes back many years. Many honor killings take place because a woman in a family or community dishonors their family. The only way for these families to clear their names of dishonor is to kill the person who brought them dishonor. “In the case of some honor killings in Europe and North America, victims have been killed for engaging in Western behaviors that are considered violations of traditional moral and behavioral codes, including the adoption of Western clothing , listening to Western music, or having a romantic affiliation with members of other ethnic or cultural groups. In some cases, individuals have been victims of honour-based violence for displaying homosexual behavior. In Europe and North America, the majority of known honor killings are linked to Muslim immigrant groups, leading to the misconception among some that Islam condones the practice. The practice of honor killings is also linked to conservative Hindu and Christian communities in some countries” (Issit). Different societies have different reasons why they practice honor killings. In Pakistan, the honor killings that appear in the middle of the paper are morally wrong. They would also like to teach me why honor killings are something they practice. To me, honor killings are morally wrong. I think it would be extremely difficult for me to understand the tradition and why societies that practice honor killings believe that it is morally right and a plausible solution. I understand the tradition behind honor killings, but I think there are many other solutions to the problems rather than killing someone. As time goes by, hopefully honor killings will happen less and less. There are many more civilized ways to resolve problems and restore honor to a family. Works Cited Chesler, P. and Bloom, N.
