  • Essay / A cultural worldview - 738

“He is not culturally “disadvantaged”, but he is culturally “different”. » (Lake 111). This quote in itself proves the argument of this article; this shows how Wind Wolf has a different culture that affects the way he sees the world. Culture is something that affects the way we live; the values and opinions one holds depend on culture. Ethnic foods, celebrated traditions, and religions are all examples of aspects influenced by culture. Surrounded by culture on a daily basis, a person's family, ethnicity, and religion have profound effects on their worldview. Ethnicity plays a monumental role in culture. This can have many effects on how a person acts within their own ethnic group. For example, the climate zone in which a person resides affects their ethnicity because it influences their lifestyle. A person who lives in a rural setting leads a different lifestyle than a person living in a colder climate, just as a person who lives in a colder climate leads a different lifestyle than a person living in a warmer climate. Depending on where they live, it affects their profession, the clothes they wear, and the way they speak. Ethnocentrism is another way ethnicity affects culture. This concept means that certain ethnic groups may believe that their culture is superior to others. Therefore, cultural conflicts develop in which everyone considers their culture to be correct and other cultures to be wrong or bad. Family traditions help people form opinions about the world. Without even knowing it, a family provides knowledge and influences the way we perceive the world. They also help define what is “normal.” In "Matrimony with a Proper Stranger" it is stated: "...the tradition of arranged marriage, consi...... middle of paper...hate Muslim culture because of incorrect stereotype . Another example of religious influence is thinking that one's religion is superior to another. This is found in almost all religions; people believe that their religion is better than other religions and believe that they are superior to others. Although one could argue that a person's culture does not affect the way they perceive the world through the experience of Richard Rodriguez who abandoned his culture for education, this is in fact the case because even though he abandoned part of his culture, it still influenced the way he saw the world through some of the things he ended up doing. Another argument that could be made is that everyone is their own individual and each person is unique. However, this idea is wrong because a person's individuality is constantly changing and he himself is affected by culture.CONCLUSION
