  • Essay / BATAM: An ethnographic film produced by Johan...

“BATAM” is an ethnographic film produced by Johan Lindquist. It features the stories of two women who live on the Indonesian island of Batam. Wati, one of the main interview participants, is a young factory worker. Another important participant, Dewi, originally from Java and who worked in an electronics factory, is currently working as a prostitute. The film mainly shows how "multinational capitalism and migration interact in the shadow of globalization." In my analysis, I will focus primarily on criticism of the film in terms of both the quality and ethical aspects of the film as an ethnographic film. An ethnographic study aims to explore and analyze a particular group of social practices of people and establishes a detailed description of the functioning of that particular social group, based on observation and usually participation in that particular group. The study is generally facilitated by interviews and data collection through the use of camera recordings. Ethnographic film is a method or means of documenting and gathering ethnographic data during fieldwork. It is also a means, adopted by the ethnographer, to disseminate or transmit ethnographic findings or knowledge with the aim of presenting an interpretation of a certain social phenomenon or a certain cultural understanding. (Yoshimizu, 2014). During the interview with Wati and Dewi, there is no interaction between the participants and the researcher. The researcher does not ask questions or respond to the participants' points of view. In this process, the researcher does not attempt to direct or restrict the subject. Instead, the researcher allows participants to freely share their views and stories in a natural way, following their own intentions...... middle of paper ......o audience watching the film . In this regard, the research results are neither authentic nor convincing. The debate led by those willing to reveal “reality” has a specific purpose. They take advantage of this powerful medium to reveal potential issues and concerns in society and express their own perspectives and understandings of their own culture and lives. There may therefore be biased or radical comments that influence the validity of the research. The fact is that the researchers themselves perfectly understand the purpose of their study. However, some participants, such as those randomly interviewed on the street, did not fully understand the purpose of their study. Therefore, their answers may not completely address the research objective, which may also mislead the research, thereby producing useless results..
