  • Essay / A Christ-like figure in Lord of the Flies - 783

A Christ-like figure is when an author develops allusions between his characters in his story of Jesus Christ. In Lord of The Flies, author William Golding describes the parallels between Simon and Jesus. Simon is one of the major characters in Lord of the Flies and is given characteristics and physical appearance linked to Jesus Christ. Simon also has a similar personality and helps the weakest of the group. Simon also experiences the devil during his travels when he was wandering in the jungle. Simon is the only "naturally good" character in the story and has many Christ-like characteristics. Simon is described as being very skinny, not a strong person and also has long hair. He is also intelligent and very determined in completing tasks. Another attribute of Simon that resembles him as a Christ-like figure is that Simon helps the weaker and smaller boys in the survival group on the island. In chapter three, Simon helps the “little ones” pick fruit from the tree. “Simon found for them the fruits they could not reach, plucked the best from the top of the foliage and returned them to the endlessly outstretched hands” (Golding page 51). Jesus also eats bread and fish and also helps the poor and sick. Jesus and Simon withdraw from society. After Simon helped the “little ones” collect fruit, he left alone and wandered into the jungle. “Simon turned away from them and went where the barely perceptible path led him. Soon the high jungle closed. He looked over his shoulder and took a quick glance around to confirm that he was completely alone” (Golding page 51). in the desert, and pr...... middle of paper ......ent stories from the Bible of Jesus Christ and interpreted them with Simon The most biblical reference in the novel is when Simon lost in the desert. jungle.
