  • Essay / Borderline Personality Disorder in Death of a Salesman

Arthur Miller wrote many great stories and plays involving motive, one of the plays he wrote was Death of a Salesman . Willy Loman, the protagonist and antagonist of the play, appears to the reader as a tragic hero who seems unreal. He is the protagonist in the sense that it is his story and it revolves around different situations which coincidentally become the reason why he is an antagonist. Willy is also seen as an antagonist as he becomes an obstacle to his son's success that he has been pursuing for years, causing his dream to be completely destroyed. The character of Willy Loman may seem a bit crazy to many readers, but in fact, Willy is a hero in distress who makes him pay the ultimate price of losing his life. There are many reasons for Willy's downfall, such as Willy's failure as a father and husband. Willy goes through regressive episodes which could have changed the ending of this play but Willy represses the conflicts which tend to erupt. Borderline personality disorder (BD) is a mental illness marked by unstable moods, behaviors, and relationships. Few symptoms of a person suffering from BPD are a pattern of intense and stormy relationships with friends and family, a distorted self-image or sense of self, and recurrent suicidal behavior. It would have been difficult for Willy's family to diagnose him with a mental disorder, due to their lack of knowledge. Willy possesses all of these symptoms which can be observed throughout the play. Willy's relationship with his son Biff is strained, the reason being that every time Biff comes home, he ends up leaving after a long argument. Despite all the fighting and insults, Biff repeatedly tries to make things right by returning home. This process...... middle of paper ... happy by doing some craft work and trying to be a good parent by motivating his sons. His other world involves spending hours in the field driving to sell his products and coming home empty-handed. When Biff and Happy return from the restaurant, they find their father outside planting. This causes Biff to become angry and confront his father with the pipe that Willy had attempted suicide with. Biff and Willy embark on their biggest fight yet. The emotional roller coaster takes off when Biff cries and jumps into Willy's arms. This incident made Willy realize that his son still loves him even after the Boston incident that tore them apart. You would think that after this father-son confrontation, everything would be fine and they would lead a normal life. A plot twist occurs as Willy leaves home to commit suicide..
