  • Essay / Greek History: The Dark Ages - 1208

More than sixty percent of English words come from the Greek language. Many of these words entered the English language through poetry and plays performed in ancient Greece. Greek plays were shaped by historical events and their tragic past and brought together into a single story. Ancient Greek theater presented historical events and poems in the form of plays such as in The Cyclops and performed them for entertainment and public awareness. Greek history has shown many tragic events over time. One of the most tragic and important periods in Greek history was known as the Dark Ages. During the Dark Ages, the Mycenaean tribe took over Greece (“Origins”). Under the rule of the Mycenaeans, almost the entire written Greek language was lost along with other ("archaic") cultural values. During Mycenaean rule, many wars took place and many people fled Greece to escape the tragedies that were occurring ("Origins"). Several medieval poets and writers began writing about tragic events and ongoing wars ("Origins"). These poems and writings helped bring Greek culture back to archaic times. When the Mycenaeans were overthrown, the ancient Greek civilizations regained power and were able to bring back Greek culture and enhance it to make it better than before (“Origins”). The Dark Ages brought many tragedies, but in the end it strengthened Greek (“archaic”) history, religion, and mythology. After the Mycenaeans left, many Greek citizens began living in tribes rather than ("archaic") cities. Through these small tribes, they began to form city-states known as "polis" ("archaic"). The city-states allowed them to govern themselves instead of a "basilisk... middle of paper... Dysseus realized that this was their opportunity to escape (Ferguson 525). The remaining men and Odysseus each hanged themselves under a sheep and escaped the cave (Ferguson 525). After this, Odysseus continues his journey home from the Trojan War. Greek history, culture and theater have come a long way and have also enriched our culture. Some of our English words come from the Greek language. For example, the English word "politics" comes from the Greek word polis, meaning city-state. Along with Greek words being added to our English language, Greek arts have also contributed to our artistic culture. In Greek plays, there was a chorus that sang and played during the plays. Today, a choir is a group of people who sing and perform together. Overall, Greek theater comes from a very strong history and has contributed to many things even today..
