  • Essay / Domestic Violence - 1337

Domestic violence is a constant problem among couples in society. This violence is not something new; this has been around for a long time. Domestic violence can be physical, mental and emotional. When a couple is in an intimate relationship or married, one of the individuals in the relationship attempts to dominate the other partner by attempting to control them. This is commonly referred to as domestic violence. A vast majority of domestic violence cases go unreported each year. This may be because the victim thinks their spouse will hurt them more if the police intervene or because they think they can fix and stop the abuse themselves. The public is more aware that women are the victims. A male victim of violence does not often attract public attention. It is believed that men are supposed to be masculine and able to handle abuse. Abused Men: The Hidden Side of Domestic Violence provides diaries of men who were abused and their emotions afterward. Some men featured in the book had called the police and the officers laughed at them and no charges were brought against the women or their partners. The police and courts have been slow to recognize the fact that men can be victims of their partners. Domestic violence is now recognized as an act of violence against all sexes. Domestic violence is not considered a gender-based crime. Men are often overlooked because the focus is on women and children who are assaulted. The number of male victims of domestic violence is unclear. Around 546,000 men consider themselves victims of domestic violence. Around 653,000 women consider themselves victims (Smol, 2010). Many men who experience domestic violence do not report it to anyone. P...... middle of paper ......times of domestic violence. CBC News: Canada.
