    Marge Piercy wrote Barbie Doll in 1973. The main message the poet sends is that girls will do anything to be considered "pretty" by society. Sometimes the poet was very sarcastic and used irony to convey the theme to the reader. Other elements of poetry are also used to help the audience understand the poem. The first three lines of the poem talk about the “little girl” growing up. She was a regular girl who played with dolls, miniature GE kitchens, and little cherry candy-colored lipsticks. Then in the fifth line she talked about puberty and her classmates made fun of her and said, "Then in the magic of puberty a classmate said: You have a very big nose and big legs." This phrase is very ironic because puberty is one of the most difficult times for a growing person. Additionally, it lowers girls' self-esteem. She was raised with the mentality that beauty is the most important thing. The tone of the poem changes and the girl begins to wonder if she is attractive.
