  • Essay / The Importance of Plants - 537

Humans depend on plants in many ways. One of the reasons we depend on plants is their consumption. Plants have the unique ability to produce their own food through a process called photosynthesis. In this process, plants are able to produce macromolecules such as carbohydrates that cannot be produced by animals or humans. In humans, the only way to obtain these macromolecules is to consume plant matter or consume herbivorous animals. When humans eat plants, carbohydrates, fats and proteins are broken down by two forms of cellular respiration. The two processes of cellular respiration observed in humans are anaerobic or aerobic. The decision-making process used depends on the presence of oxygen. Cellular respiration converts matter into usable energy called ATP. ATP is the form of energy that cells can use to perform their various functions and it can also be stored for later use. Without plants, none of this energy could be produced and the herbivores that humans consume would not exist. Plant cells also undergo cellular respiration, which creates ...
