  • Essay / Simmel versus Du Bois Theories in the Social Sciences

Throughout history, Georg Simmel and WEB Du Bois have had a substantial influence on the imperative theories and concepts developed in the social sciences. Two of the most significant and distinguished concepts promoted by these two theorists are the concepts of "double consciousness" and the "alien." In this essay, I will analyze each of these works to draw out the differences and similarities between the two. The similarities that I will develop are the use of the paradoxical figure, which both theorists discuss in their theories, and the coexisting sensation of division in relation to conventional society. The contrast between the two theories that I will explore lies in the perception that conventional society has of these paradoxical figures. In Simmel's works, the foreigner is seen as a beneficial addition to our society. But on the other hand, for Du Bois, the work of the seventh son is considered more of a handicap for society. The idea of double consciousness was first conceptualized by WEB Du Bois. In his writing “The Souls of Black Folk,” Du Bois reflects on the subjective consequences of being black in America. On the concept, Du Bois says: "After the Egyptian and the Indian, the Greek and the Roman, the Teuton and the Mongol, the Negro is a sort of seventh son, born with a veil, and gifted with a second seen in this American world, --a world which gives him no true self-awareness, but only allows him to see himself through the revelation of the other world. It's a special sensation, this double consciousness, this feeling of always looking at oneself through the eyes of others, of measuring one's soul against the yardstick of a world that looks on with amused contempt and pity. We always feel its duality,--an America...... middle of paper ......y. The foreigner helps to build a society in which the seventh son, or African-American, is considered to devalue or hinder a society (Du Bois, 10; Simmel, 149). One of the most important factors is the influence of group behavior. that help shape and contribute to a functional society. With their work, William Edward BurghardtDu Bois and Georg Simmel use their theories to explore many social issues still present in society today, such as inequality. Both Simmel and Du Bois discuss issues such as the sense of lack of belonging felt by outsiders within a society where they may be tolerated, but not fully accepted. What Du Bois and Simmel do not share, however, is the idea of a level of appreciation. Perhaps the problem is deeper than a stranger and a seventh son, but rather a question of race or historical context..
