  • Essay / Why Umuofia is responsible for things falling apart

In pre-colonial Africa, villages lived graciously following their own culture that they had created. In the literary work Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, the setting of the book took place during this period. Each African village had its evil forest and the villagers were polytheists, like Umuofia for example. Although many people respected their way of life, like Okonkwo, English missionaries soon took over. At the end of the novel, Okonkwo has committed suicide. The person to blame was not just one person, but a whole, namely Umuofia. Umuofia, Okonkwo's own village, led to his suicide because Umuofia put Okonkwo into exile, allowed missionaries to take over, and ignored Okonkwo after his return from exile. Okonkwo respected Umuofia very highly even when he was put into exile. Because Okonkwo was exiled by Umuofia, he lost everything. For example, when he traveled to Mbanta, his homeland, he was given “land on which to build his compound, and two or three plots of land on which to cultivate during the next growing season” (130). Receiving this small land showed how humble the people of his homeland had considered him, unlike how the people of Umuofia viewed him. He lost his wealth and needed a new reputation by starting in a new village. Additionally, he also lost his status by starting in a new place. “His life had been governed by a great passion: to become one of the lords of the clan... Then everything had been shattered. He had been cast out of his clan like a fish on a dry sandy beach, panting” (131). Okonkwo was barely an inch away from becoming one of the lords of Umuofia, but after his exile, all his chances were diminished. This gave him one less reason to live, contributing to the factors of Okonkwo's suicide......middle of the newspaper...as listened to me” (195), Okonkwo said. The clansmen were afraid to kill the white man even if they had the chance because of the consequences they would face. Umuofia's decision to ignore Okonkwo and not go to war against the missionaries contributed to Okonkwo's suicide. If Umuofia had accepted the idea of war, Okonkwo would not have needed to take matters into his own hands. Overall, Okonkwo didn't like change. Umuofia went through tons of changes, but instead of facing the changes, he chose to commit suicide. If Umuofia had fought the missionaries, it would have shown their dedication to Umuofia, which is what they lived with for the last years of their lives. No one had as much dedication to their clan as Okonkwo. Okonkwo would have been alive if Umuofia had not exiled him, let the missionaries in and listened to him when he returned from exile..
