  • Essay / Media-induced self-harm - 883

Media surrounds all people living in all parts of the world. Whether media is seen in the form of television shows and advertisements, magazines, films, billboards and newspapers, media is everywhere. You might not notice it, but you can't go anywhere or do anything without coming across some sort of media. Although few media messages can be considered positive, the truth is that the media is harming America's teenagers today. These messages destroy teens' body image, which unfortunately leads to self-harm. Not only can media lead to self-harm, but it also causes many teens to develop unhealthy habits in order to live up to the perceived perfection they see in the media. Just as important, the growing number of unsafe teens can leave teens and their families with costly medical bills. The world we live in should not be filled with people of all ages and genders who harm themselves and their families in order to feel socially acceptable and presentable. As stated previously, there are many cases of self-harm due to media. Certainly, young people agree that there are many well-known and admired celebrities who abuse substances, making it seem like a good idea to do so. Many men and even women take steroids in order to achieve greater muscle tone. This can cause them harm in the long run because it is illegal and can lead to legal consequences. Steroids can also increase acne, yellowing of the skin, the risk of heart attacks, the possibility of ruptured tendons, and steroids can even increase the size of a person's heart (DeNoon 2). In addition to substance abuse, adolescents may harm themselves by cutting or burning themselves (“Adolescent Self Harm.” ...... middle of article .......
