A strong nation has an excellent education system in which children can excel. Nonetheless, America suffers from an education crisis. The United States has fallen to 17th in education among other countries due to its teaching methods and the culture surrounding education. Solutions to the education crisis include: professional learning communities and finding ways to change educational culture. Current U.S. education news and statistics. The United States ranks 17th in education. Finland and South Korea take first place, with Japan and Singapore just behind them (“Best Education in the World,” paras. 1, 2). The rankings are based on international test scores, graduation rates between 2006 and 2010, and the number of people seeking higher education (“Best Education in the World” paragraph 2). The United States also ranks 25th in math, 17th in science, and 14th in reading (“World's Best Education,” paragraph 10). U.S. fourth graders rank 11th in math in the Study of International Trends in Math and Science (“U.S. Education Spending Tops World List” para. 9, 10). Sixty-six percent of all fourth graders are not reading at grade level (Reese, Fredrick para. 3). Fourteen percent of the population, or 32 million adults, cannot read. Nineteen percent of high school graduates cannot read. When a person is doing a task that they are not interested in, they will not do their best. If America wants to stay on top in education, it must improve its “diameter.” they want children to excel within their “circumference” of activities.
