Dream of a world with only one culture. Since there is only one culture, nothing is different. It would be a wonderful way to live life. There would be no problem between people of different cultures. Everyone has their own view on things, so it is natural for the views of one race to conflict with those of another. All cultures have their own special rituals that may interrupt or bore people from another culture. For example, an Indian may wake up early in the morning and play loud spiritual music to pray to his gods. This would inconvenience neighbors of different races who might wake up late. After closely observing groups of people in many places, people will notice that all members of that group are of the same race. Since everyone shares the same point of view or culture, they tend to get along comfortably. Why have so many cultures when people just want to get along with people from the same culture? Abandoning cultures and individuality is worth having limited problems. After exploring the idea of ​​homogeneity in The Giver, Lois Lowry shows that although there are problems with living in such a unique community, it ultimately benefits because there are fewer problems and horrible feelings. Although the community benefits from homogeneity, there are certain things it is deprived of. Even though color is not absolutely necessary for a society to function properly, it is still something important that this community lacks. “The red was so beautiful” (Lowry 95). This quote shows that once Jonas is exposed to colors, he realizes how beautiful and important they are. Every time he sees rare flashes of red, he gets excited and loves it. Unfortunately, there are no colors to beautify things and no freedom to make choices; however, the pros outweigh the cons. Mistakes are not possible because similarity gives people no choice to be wrong. The members of the community can all be considered as one culture. No color creates very few feature-related issues. Sameness controls Mother Nature and helps nourish the community by stopping the competitions, so that it can survive and thrive without much trouble. The community as a whole does not feel real pain because they do not have access to sad memories. It is a good thing that the community is in Unity, and Unity is the community.
