  • Essay / Civil Liberties and Civil Rights - 1049

Civil liberties and civil rights are among the most controversial issues in society and government today. Debates on these freedoms and rights are essential. Topics such as the violation of these rights by the government, through laws and the like, and even the violation of these rights by society, through the people's feelings of equality, seem to take center stage every time that they are discussed. This controversy stems from the Constitution's Bill of Rights and its ambiguity regarding the Fourteenth Amendment and how it should apply and grow with society. In my opinion, I think civil liberties and civil rights are crucial to our country as a whole, but addressing them here, in their entirety, would be impossible and overall unnecessary. Yet, if I were in government and were amending or interpreting the Constitution, keeping in mind the changes I would like to make to the Constitution since my last essay, I would like to identify freedom of religion, freedom of speech and the pursuit of happiness are the most fundamental civil liberties and civil rights mentioned, and I would like to reiterate or add this to my constitution. To open this discussion, I would like to start with the civil liberty of religious freedom. This freedom was identified in my original essay on the Constitution by mentioning the separation of church and state clause. The reason I included this freedom and highlighted its importance is that I believe the government is interpreting this freedom in a unilateral manner due to the incorrect interpretation of the clause already in place on the separation of the Church and the State. I also include it because I believe that recently attacks on religion have metastasized and...... middle of paper...... this should only be limited by that of the choices that the the individual and the opportunities available to him. said individual may or may not benefit from them, not by the choices and opportunities that others may or may not make for them. In these aspects of equality and autonomy, I believe that only government is powerful enough to ensure or attempt to ensure this pursuit. To conclude, I discussed the two main ideas that I wanted to add to my essay on the constitution, as well as: with a civil liberty that I had already discussed. I explained my reasoning for establishing the civil liberty of religious protection in my original article, as well as the reasons why I wanted to add those of freedom of speech and the pursuit of happiness. All of this combined forms a more complete picture of what I want this country to be and how I want this country to function..
