  • Essay / The Military Use of Animals - 870

Since the earliest days of man, creative uses of animals have emerged. Since the time of Mongol leader Timur and Sultan Muhmad Khan, many military uses have been created. These creative ideas are still being created today, and modern countries are finding many uses of animals such as monkeys, seals, dolphins, goats, elephants, and other animals in the military. Although the truth is before our eyes, many people do not believe that these animals appear on battlefields and in the oceans with humans defusing bombs and attacking enemies on other lines. One of the world's first documented uses of animals in the military appeared around 1398. That year, the Mongol army invaded India astride military elephants with scimitars attached to their tusks. To stop the Mongols and their powerful army of armored elephants, Timur, the Indian sultan, ordered that all his camels going to the front be covered in oil and straw, then set on fire. As expected, the camels charged forward, frightening the elephants who retreated backwards, killing and trampling the entire Mongol army (Sloan 1). Even though military animals receive the same treatment and training as humans, these tactics have now become very controversial and many people are protesting against them. The leaking of numerous training videos involving these military animals has not helped the military cause. These videos show the use of monkeys and goats in medical training, proving that the military is violating its own animal welfare regulations (Lawrence 1). The response of these military personnel did not help their cause either, a former military doctor responded to these videos saying that these training videos are not enough to reproduce b...... middle of paper ... ...examples of how intelligent they are and what a wealth of knowledge not only of humans, to think about this use, but also of animals, to be able to understand and play their role in protection and attack in wartime.
