  • Essay / In Sidewalk - 1538

In Sidewalk, sociologist Mitchell Duneier presents the results of his research on life on the sidewalks by staying and working on the street alongside other vendors for a period of time. While working on the street, Duneier learned that respect plays an important role and that people on the street need respect to stay on the sidewalk. Respect allows Duneier to successfully conduct research, determine how individuals will be treated, and help maintain order on the sidewalk because all persons associated with the sidewalk, including pedestrians and store employees , want to be respected. Mitchell Duneier started doing this research in the 1990s in New York. Sixth Avenue was a place where many vendors and panhandlers, mostly black and other minorities, made money every day. Vendors had to sell whatever magazines and books they could find (purchased from scavengers or found on their own in dumpsters) and beggars would get up and sit on the sidewalk and ask passersby for change spare. There were also several other types of "jobs" on the street, such as scavengers, movers, and warehouse workers. Duneier wanted to learn more about sidewalk life, so he decided to work on the street alongside vendors and beggars in order to gain first-hand experience and have the opportunity to easily interview people working in the street. Street. Respect is vital at Duneier because it needs the full approval and cooperation of suppliers to complete its research so that Duneier can complete its research. Since Duneier is extremely different from the people who work the streets in various ways (he is a rich, educated white sociologist who didn't have to worry about anything growing up), he must gradually gain respect. ... middle of paper ... in the toilet because "[His] body and clothes were dirty and stinking and smelled of alcohol" (177). Ron didn't want to affect business customers, so he decided not to use this restroom. Ron was an alcoholic and drug addict, and he knew that when he was drunk he could upset a lot of people and cause a lot of nuisance if he chose to go into businesses and use the restrooms. It doesn't matter what kind of person you are. you want to be respected in some way, and that's why respect is important throughout the book. Duneier, people who work on the streets, and people affected by street workers all need respect from each other, but their motivations are a little different. Even though there is still discrimination and stereotypes against people who work on the streets, if they try to reach out to people and respect them, the stereotypes could slowly disappear..
