  • Essay / Poverty Discussion Paper - 903

Poverty is not one man's problem, but it is the issue of the unity of humanity. Although I am not Karl Marx, or even a modern-day Mahatma Gandhi, I believe that there must be a new protocol to the conflicts surrounding this issue. Every human being should deserve the right to education and deserve the privilege of not dying for lack of common resources like food. There must be a certain level of pragmatism in our role as a global community aimed at ending the suffering resulting from our greed. Today, many people still live on a salary of 1 US dollar, and we still have the nerve to accept this as a “normal” establishment. What is not normal is to believe that war is the solution to peace, or that the sovereignty of a country can be threatened by the military powers of any nation. I mention this because war has always been an instrument for the desolate places of poverty, alongside the oligarchies of today's political systems. We are all except one race, the human race, and must begin to care about the least in our society for peace to continue. May those living in poverty know that they are not forgotten and that, through the power of education, many leaders will be encouraged to end this global phenomenon.
