  • Essay / My field experience in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses

Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's WitnessesFor my field experience activity, I chose to visit the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses Jehovah in Cumming, Georgia. I chose this particular location because not only did it represent a religious area that I was very poorly informed about, but this specific building has been there for almost 15 years now and I would say I walked past it without paying attention. about 5 to 6 times a week for several years. The Kingdom Hall is made entirely of red brick. The Kingdom Hall building is a simple layout. They have a general meeting space of approximately 150 seats indoors and a podium for conferences. They have a few extra rooms for storage purposes and multi-purpose spaces like a kitchen and other open spaces for different things. A friend of mine had conducted a similar field activity and introduced me to Gary and Dina Roy, participants in the Jouir Kingdom Hall. When I arrived, I didn't know what to expect. I met a few Jehovah's Witnesses in college, but never spent enough time with them to draw conclusions about their religion and culture. All I really knew was that they couldn't celebrate school holidays, but I never knew why. My father told me that they didn't believe in Jesus and that they were a cult. I felt like my father was wrong about his faith, so I went into my field experience with an open mind, hoping to become more informed about a sect of my own religion, Christianity. My friend told me that it was essential to keep an open mind and that I would soon embark on a journey full of new perspectives. My first visit was a simple observation visit. I met Gary and Dina at the Kingdom Hall for the 1 p.m. Bible talk service and the paper in the middle of their paper. In the future, I intend to be more accepting of other faiths and practices. The whole environment was the most welcoming and accepting environment I have ever been a part of. Despite all this, I only met friendly people and I was never uncomfortable. Every single person remembered my name and made an effort to get to know me, a feeling that warms everyone. Since then, I've started to wonder how many other bands I've jumped to conclusions about without seeing it for myself. Since my time with the Roys, my goal has been to reevaluate my previous assumptions and diversify my experiences to better inform myself about things that I know little about. I learned that you shouldn't always believe what you are told, but rather go out and see for yourself. Keeping an Open Mind Will Probably Change Your Life Forever.
