In this essay I will inform you about information about people from Mississippi who have made a huge impact in life. We have people like Ruby Bridges who went to an all-white school. Ida B Wells, one of the early leaders of the civil rights movement, was also a writer. Finally, Mrs. Oprah Gail Winfrey, the most influential woman in the world. On September 8, 1954, Ruby Bridges was born in Tylertown, Mississippi to parents Lucille and Abon Bridges. At the age of 4, Ruby Bridges and her family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1960, Ruby's parents asked her to participate in the NAACP New Orleans Color System program. The program aimed to integrate blacks into an all-white elementary school called William Frantz Elementary School. Ruby's father, Abon, was very hesitant about his daughter attending school with 5 other black students. They had all passed the test to attend William Frantz Elementary School, but Ruby ended up being the only one to attend. Two more of the 6 black students returned to their old school and the other three chose to transfer to another school, leaving Ruby to go alone. Ruby's mother, Lucille, felt strongly about her choice to send her daughter to William Frantz Elementary School. She felt it was a great opportunity for a better education for her daughter and it was the first step for all African American black children on November 14, 1960, Ruby Bridges' first day of school. She was surrounded by police and her mother as she walked to school. Ruby had to walk through a crowd of angry white people who were holding up signs and shouting names at her. Ruby never cried or showed signs of weakness. She held her head high and continued on her way through the building. White people... middle of paper ...... Chicago Show!
