    As with most works of literature, the title Fences is more than just a title. It might initially be noted that there is only one physical fence built by the characters on stage, but what is more important are the ideas that are kept inside and outside the constructed fences by Troy and some of the other characters in Fences. The construction of the fence becomes quite figurative, as Troy attempts to fence off his own desires and infidelities. In trying to contain his desires and his hypocrisies, one might say, Troy finds himself trapped, caught between his pragmatic and illusory ideals. On one side of the fence, Troy creates illusions and embellishments about the truth, recounting how he struggled with death, his encounters with the devil, and then his confrontation with the devil....
