    Middle adulthood is an accomplished period in life. A middle-aged person has a career, a family, and the ability to care for and guide the next generation. Better yet, the individual is neither “young” nor “old” in terms of age. At this stage of development, adults can expect to be busy with creative and meaningful work. Likewise, they can “be in charge,” a role they have envied since adulthood. Although it is a fairly stable period of life compared to adolescence, individuals aged 45 to 65 face many problems. As Erik Erikson described in his theory of the eight stages of human development, adults at this stage of development are caught in a dilemma between generativity and stagnation. Adults in generativity focus on education, creating things that will outlive themselves, and being involved with future generations. This affects current and future quality of life, because generativity makes adults feel useful and makes them want to contribute more to society. Alternatively, stagnation is a negative period in life that involves a lack of problem solving that ultimately leads to self-absorption. and zero growth as a mature adult in the future. Some life issues that encourage stagnation are finances, health changes, difficult marriages, family feuds, lack of personal time, unexpected tragedies, aging children, and chronic stress. These events affect the quality of life because they can lead to despair later in life, that is, a feeling of unobtainable fulfillment and incompleteness that ultimately leads to unacceptance of life itself. even and to the fear of death.
