  • Essay / Leadership and organizational culture - 1813

House et al. (2007) finds that leadership and organizational culture are closely related as leaders influence the culture of their organizations. Research speaks to a range of definitions of leadership, but they are not easy to define. (e.g. Western, 2008; Yukl, 2010). However, Cohen (2009) critically analyzes the definitions of Dracker (1996), Eisenhower (1969), Northouse (2004) and finally summarizes the definition of leadership consisting of five elements. First, ask questions to set direction, which means effective leaders must respectfully listen to the voices of their followers and then share common goals and ideas with them. Additionally, managers must seek information and allocate resources optimally; act ethically; enable their employees to work in the most compliant and efficient manner possible. This essay will explain the different leadership styles and how they influence organizations with examples of organizations and leaders with a focus on the well-known entrepreneur: Sir Alan Sugar. He went from nothing to incredible success (£730 million), is a legend in British business history; his reality TV show “The Apprentice”, wonderful entertainment for recruitment, seduces the public for no reason. However, as a person, he is controversial among people, probably due to his leadership style like bullying or (destructive) harassment. There are four schools of leadership styles: trait, behavioral, contingent and transformational. Nevertheless, in the case of Alan Sugar, the character traits and transactional styles correspond to him, which will be illustrated below in detail. As Yukl (2010) states, such factors (e.g. personality, values and abilities) are attributed to a leader. Normally, it is widely believed that someone is born to be a leader...... middle of paper ...... a man who enables others to think and do in his way (model) and his employees work for unconditional loyalty (e.g. their PA), also adopts a fair system of rewards and punishments; However, as a leader, he sometimes simply needs transformation styles that respect and communicate equally with his followers rather than force them to rudely shut up. Regarding organizational culture, the article allows us to better understand that certain factors make it possible to detect the existence of cultures in an organization, such as the communication system, for example. As a result, it can be identified that its culture can not only be classified as a power culture but also as a task. Moreover, due to the changing external environment, composed and flexible cultures seem to be a better way for the sustainable development of an organization. Leadership is therefore closely linked to organizational culture..
