  • Essay / Analysis of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott - 1351

Louisa May Alcott is one of many American authors remembered for her works. Alcott's most famous literary work is Little Women. The events that take place during this novel are based on events that occurred during Alcott's life. Alcott has brilliantly depicted the life of a 19th century American family in his novel. When writing his novel, Alcott applied John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. This reflected both the usual and original tendencies of his work. Alcott developed the morality of his characters around the story of the pilgrim who travels from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City facing internal and external demons (“Novel Summaries Analysis” n. pg.). Little Women was typical of 19th-century young adult books because its layout was episodic and the chapters were devoted to individual sisters (Salwak 810). Alcott kept his complex prose available by using an abundance of dialogue and making sure none of the sentences were long (Shmoop Editorial Team n. pg.). The March sisters, in the novel, were modeled on Alcott's own sisters (Gosman np). Throughout the novel, the sisters had to overcome their character flaws and become “little women.” At 16, Meg was the oldest. She cared too much about her appearance and not enough about work. She had to learn to spend more time with her family and less time dreaming of a life of glamor and luxury. Jo was 15 years old and had a violent character. She was a bold, rebellious and spirited girl who wrote plays, poems and short stories. She had to come to terms with being a girl full of balance, grace and tolerance. Beth was 13 and an excellent pianist. She had to overcome her shyness. At 10 years old, Amy was the youngest ... middle of paper ... and she did spectacularly well. Alcott uses an affectionate tone to describe the characters in the book since it is based on his own family life. Each sister's personal struggles are depicted in loving detail. It's as if the narrator sympathizes with everything he's experiencing. The narrator is affectionate towards all the characters in the novel. She shows sympathy for them in the situations they find themselves in (Shmoop Editorial Team n.pg.). In conclusion, Alcott uses many different literary elements in his works. She is considered one of America's greatest authors because of her use of elements. Little Women is his greatest work. Reviewers agree that the characters are well-drawn and colorful and the plots are complex and tightly woven ("Louisa May Alcott"). Alcott brilliantly depicted a modern 19th century family in his work Little Women..
