  • Essay / Othello by William Shakespeare - 568

In the play Othello by William Shakespeare, the character Othello is portrayed as a fairly good man. Some may consider him a bad person, but he became extremely beneficial to the growth of Venice and the state of Cyprus. Othello is a good man even though he committed the murder of his wife because he is a great war general and contributed to Cyprus in times of need. While Othello murdered his wife Desdemona, he did so purely out of misunderstanding and jealousy. Iago made Othello believe that Desdemona was cheating on him with Cassio even though she had never committed such actions. Iago's persistence and villainous intentions made Othello jealous of Cassio, he broke his emotions towards Desdemona and wanted to kill her with fierce rage. Othello would not commit such a crime if he knew it was a lie, because Othello loves Desdemona and would die for her. Othello was madly in love with Desdemona and they had compassion for each other, but he was led astray and confused by the jealousy and hatred that diverted him to his sinister fate. Othello cannot be justified as a bad person because of one incident, especially after all the great things he has done and achieved for the city-states. Iago is the true antagonist and has become the bad man of the play as his roles are to protect the crown Othello was in and remain loyal to his fellow soldiers but throughout the play he has been quite the opposite with characteristics such as being a liar, nonsense. faithful to each character in the play. Othello is a good man but has taken the wrong path. He is well known in Venice, even though he is Moorish because of his irreplaceable honor. He has a good heart towards most people he meets because he believes in friendship. This led him to meet Desdemona and eventually marry her in whom he showed a passionate interest. Othello easily trusted people, which shows that he is a very likeable character but he gave it to the wrong person, which is Iago. He trusted Iago even though Iago's intentions were only to have him killed or arrested. Othello had honor and accounted for all his stupid mistakes that only a few loyal soldiers can make. In the story, he showed these characteristics by committing suicide after realizing the deadly mistakes he had made..
