    OBJECTIVE: Establish procedures for the provision of dental services to offenders. APPLICABILITY: Suffolk South Bay Department of Corrections (DOC) Dental Clinic. POLICY: A Massachusetts licensed clinic Dentist will provide and/or direct appropriate and clinically appropriate emergency and urgent dental care to offenders. Access is via screening, referral, sick call, safety, severity, time of day, staff, and offender cooperation and consent are considered. Routine dental care will be provided as availability permits. To the extent possible in a correctional facility environment, the following applies:A. Dental screening will be conducted upon admission “Intake Screening” and “Health Screenings and Comprehensive Health Evaluations”.1. Oral statusB. A department dentist will perform an annual dental examination within 120 days of admission to the DOC for all offenders who:1. Have not had an annual dental exam in the last three years (previous incarceration); and2. Have a sentence of at least 12 months. This does not apply to new promotions.C. The treating dentist will prioritize treatment based on six levels of dental care.1. Emergency Dental Care - Level 1. All offenders have access to emergency care at any time through staff referral and appropriate use of sick calls.2. Urgent Dental Care – Level 2. Urgent care needs are prioritized for treatment based on department dentist authorization and appointment availability. Level 2 care is available to all offenders, regardless of the length of their detention.3. Routine restorative dental care - level 3. Care provided according to availability.
