Tom is innocent, willing to help people, seeing the world as a positive place even if it is not what it seems. He is a gentleman who has been demeaned simply because they are considered "different" in Maycomb society. He was ready to help Mayella, a lonely and helpless girl, who needs his help because her father doesn't need it. He felt sorry for her, but ultimately he was accused of a crime he never committed.
