  • Essay / Similarities between To Kill a Mockinbir by Lee Harper...

A mockingbird is the innocence of a bird that sings only for others, bringing pleasure to those who will listen. Tom is innocent, willing to help people, seeing the world as a positive place even if it is not what it seems. He is a gentleman who has been demeaned simply because they are considered "different" in Maycomb society. He was ready to help Mayella, a lonely and helpless girl, who needs his help because her father doesn't need it. He felt sorry for her, but ultimately he was accused of a crime he never committed. The blue jay is loud and arrogant; where elsewhere the mockingbirds only sing the songs of other birds. The people of Maycomb only knew Tom Robinson from what others said and accused about him, he hadn't had the chance to really show them his true self. He didn't have his own freedom, he didn't have a "song", just like a mockingbird. Therefore, he was characterized by the views of others, and not by the expression of his true personality. In the novel, Atticus says to Scout and Jem, "I'd rather you shoot cans in the yard, but I know you'll go after them." "Birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit them, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." Tom was charged by the town for things he did not do. It is a sin to kill a mockingbird that only sings to people and it is a sin to judge people by their appearance and outward judgments. He was discriminated against, blamed for what he didn't do, simply because he didn't respect the status quo. Tom Robinson is like a mockingbird, he did nothing wrong. They "do nothing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't devour people's gardens, they don't nest in corn crèches, they don't do anything but sing their whole heart for us." All he did was provide aid to... middle of paper ... Well, the most despised of the white population and therefore, to them, the only reason Tom offers such aid would be for a sinister purpose. For a cause. On the contrary, Tom Robinson is a good man, not like the white people stereotype black people. He was clearly misunderstood, but he couldn't feel anything other than helplessness, while still holding on to a glimmer of hope. In conclusion, Mockingbirds are caregivers. They provide beautiful music to those they are trying to help. They never did anything other than sing their hearts out through their good deeds. Tom was misjudged based on a false accusation. Black people did not have their own song, others sang their songs based on their beliefs. People only knew Tom Robinson through what others said about him. He was an outcast from society. They never did anything to hurt anyone, they never deserved to be put down by society..
