  • Essay / The Times Square Experience - 979

Silence does not exist here. Everything jumps out at you, like a peacock's feathers, immediately grabbing your attention. There are countless masses of moving colored spots, but within this great globe there are many people, each moving with the mighty confidence of a lion. The buildings tower over all the people, a large oak tree above thousands of ants, connecting this concrete landscape. There is an atmosphere of tangible wonder and you are left in awe of such an amazing place. This magnificent place is none other than Times Square in New York. It takes a while to process everything that's going on, but once you see the whole picture, the smallest details stand out and are noticeable, even in the visually aggressive Square. The tall buildings are the first things we recognize; their size alone makes you feel like an ordinary little speck of dust. Each has its own character and has been created with a unique design. Windows are a unifying factor of buildings. The glass surface reflects the afternoon sunlight, forming a giant mirror on the sides of the buildings. The mirrors create a huge room of distorted reflections of other buildings. Advertisements hang from buildings for everything under the sun. Many billboards are for the various musicals that will soon be shown on Broadway; the classics, like West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera, Annie and Wicked, are still there. Others announce the release of a new HP laptop or a Samsung HDTV. Some reveal a high fashion store's new fall line of sweaters and jeans. Of course, there's the obligatory Coke ad, inviting you to enjoy a refreshing bottle of ice-cold Coke. Cars are lined up...... middle of paper ...... res and spending hundreds – and for some, even thousands of dollars, and yet this man has no money for a meal decent. His face is mostly covered by a dirty slide, but the few visible spots are wrinkled, either from age or the stress of wondering how we'll survive the week. Without a doubt, Times Square in New York is a unique experience, but the image created by television and cinema does not show the gloom that accompanies the euphoria of being in the Big Apple. The atmosphere is so exhilarating and exciting that one doesn't even know what to do for a few minutes, but it is tinged with the bitter reality that sadness and melancholy also closely follow the positive. With most, if not all, of your senses stimulated – sometimes all at once – Times Square creates a memory that will surely be cherished and haunt you for the rest of your life..
