  • Essay / Seat Belts on School Buses: A Necessity or an Everyday...

In the late 1920s, school buses and large industrial vehicles became a popular source of transportation, starting with the owner of the Ford dealership, AL Luce. Luce planned to expand the school bus chassis (from a Model T) to accommodate more students per bus. As school buses and transit buses have become more common in American cities for everyday transportation, safety rules and precautions have been put in place. Safety features including flashing warning lights, visors on the exterior of the vehicle, and stop signs and motorized stop arms were all installed over the next 80 years to make the safer journey to and from school. Although many of these precautions have been taken, many citizens believe that insufficient steps have been taken to promote safety on school buses. Since various school transportation companies do not have a position on whether seat belts should be installed or not, safety concerns mainly affect parents and school leaders. A good solution for many would be the installation of seat belts on all school buses in the United States, but the reality of seat belts on buses is quite the opposite of what people believe . Seat belts do not warrant these safety concerns for schools and parents nationwide because seat belts are a costly and dangerous factor. At the turn of the 21st century, the National Association of State Directors of Student Transportation Services (NASDPTS) stated a plea to consider the installation of three-point seat belts (three points of attachment for a student) or two-point seat belts on the assembly line (Gray). NASDPTS said: “We believe this decision should be based on state or local needs, but we also believe that lap/shoulder belts…should be…… middle of paper……at l bus stop with their child every day.
