  • Essay / The Historical Significance of North Africa - 1490

The history of humanity is a history of war and most of history is recorded by conquerors or colonizers. The history of Africa and more particularly of the North African region has been largely ignored by researchers. (Conference, 8/6) The countries of the North African region, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia and the disputed territory of Western Sahara (Conference, 8/ 6) is generally considered a poor, weak, insignificant and uncivilized country. However, these countries have played an important role in impacting other regions of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with their religion, science, cultural ideas, politics, commerce and much more. Built in 661, the Umay...... middle of paper ......European Mediterranean countries suffer from low incomes, insufficient GNP growth in relation to their population growth, inflation and high unemployment, widespread illiteracy and inadequate health services. ยป (Gold, 27) Therefore, the important geographical location of North African countries significantly influences European nations. The Islamic world today remains a vast land stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific, with a significant presence in Europe and America. (Lesson 8/6) Colonized for quite a long time, the countries of North Africa wish to live in peace with the West as with the East but at the same time not to be dominated by them. For many centuries they have functioned as a "crossroads" (Clancy-Smith, 1) of culture, politics, commerce, science and much more, and they still wish to enshrine their religion, their resources and their energies for the construction of crossroads..
