Even though he is firm and powerful, I believe he suffers from an inner fear. His greatest fear is becoming like his father: lazy, unable to provide for his family, and a coward. Okonkwo thinks his father's mannerisms are feminine and he reacts the way he does to avoid being like his father. This means that he works hard, provides for his family, is courageous and masculine in every way. Okonkwo succeeds in many ways. He becomes very wealthy, holds a high position in the community, has three wives, and is known for his wrestling and warrior skills. But you will find that despite all his positive qualities, his fear of being like his father forces him to make unnecessary and harmful decisions. His fear of being like his father leads him to participate in the murder of Ikemefuna – who was like a son, beat his wives, be emotionally distant from his children and disown his eldest son.
