  • Essay / Tourist Britain: a mix of tradition and modernity

    For tourists, Great Britain presents itself as full of tradition and pride in its history. Foreigners think it's a land of red telephone boxes, guards in fuzzy hats, tartan bagpipers and double-decker buses. People imagine a strict adherence to tradition: stopping for afternoon tea, always stopping for a nice lunch of fish and chips, and declaring "God save the Queen!" » However, tourism in Britain is not all tradition. Modern technology, ideas and innovation have seeped into Britain, surprising tourists and resulting in a rather successful balance between tradition and modernity. Although modernity has blended into British traditions, some purely traditional lighting fixtures have no trace of modernity. These traditional objects or events have no other purpose than to attract tourists and perpetuate tourism industries. One example is the warm and iconic red telephone box with its rounded roof. Designed in 1924 by Giles Gilbert Scott and renovated in 1935, the booths were once an integral part of communications (The Telephone Box). Today, in the age of email, Facebook and texting, pay phones have outlived their usefulness. The remaining 11,000 stands are mainly used for taking tourist photos. However, without them, tourism in Britain would suffer. Tourism in Britain is extremely important, accounting for “around 10% of the British economy” (the British tourism industry). The result is a £127 billion industry that “employs 3 million people” (the UK tourism industry). This massive industry is expected to only grow, helping to double the value of the industry and adding "£12 billion a year by 2025" to the economy (tourism will bring in £257 billion of pounds sterling to the British economy).
