  • Essay / Variable responses to tacrolimus - 592

Tacrolimus is a medication administered as an immunosuppressant to transplant patients to reduce the risk of transplant organ rejection. Therapeutic medication mentoring is performed on patients receiving this medication, however, patients still demonstrate enormous variability in response to the medication. This variability could be the result of interindividual differences in pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, or both. The current two papers primarily aim to develop population pharmacokinetic models that allow us to better understand the pharmacokinetics of tacrolimus. Additionally, population pharmacokinetic studies allow us to evaluate the effect of certain “covariate” factors as a cause of the interindividual variability observed between patients. As a group, we agreed that the article by Monchaud et al is more clinically meaningful. Monchaud's article was published in the journal Clinical Pharmacokinetics and has an impact factor of 6.1. This article is interesting because it is the first article to perform a population pharmacokinetic analysis of tacrolimus in lung transplant patients. Additionally, the authors were able...
