  • Essay / The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham - 1159

Dystopia, the opposite of utopia, is a non-existent place where people are unhappy and desperate due to certain reasons such as an apocalyptic event. Often in a dystopian world, people often lose the ability to speak and become desperate. The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndhams is a post-apocalyptic novel that deals with blindness and the new class system caused by most people becoming blind from the debris of a comet. The protagonist, Bill Masen, who missed the comet debris, rendering most of the planet's inhabitants blind, adapts to the new law and policy developed by the non-blind. The Road by Cormac McCarthys is a post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son traveling to find safe shelter and food. Wherever they go, they can't stop because there are so many "bad guys" who question killing or raping people. Later in the story, the father dies and the son meets a family who seem to be the only "good guys" in the story. Riddley Walker by Russell Hobans is a story set long after the disaster. Ridley, the protagonist, is trying to figure out how to make the nuclear weapon that was used before the disaster. In all three books, language is used to describe the state of well-being of society, illustrated by the time elapsed after the disaster, the use of loss of names, knowledge and beliefs. The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndhams, is set in a time when the world has just experienced a catastrophe, so the language is largely intact. Unlike two other novels, The Road by Cormac McCarthys and Riddley Walker by Russell Hobans, the state of society in The Day of the Triffis is relatively better since less time has passed since the disaster. The language used in The Day of the Triffis... ... middle of paper ...... the stronger our language, the better the state of society and this affects the way we think about certain issues. Language is one of the most important things in our culture because it allows us to transmit knowledge and can be used as power. Language can act as power when someone changes the information we know, making that person the only one with the appropriate knowledge. If there was no language, our history would have changed dramatically, and even if we had a language, the history of our culture might not be true. Names are also another important thing in our culture because they give us information about the function of an object. Therefore, in a society, the condition of the society is represented by language which can be affected or shown by the time that has passed after the disaster, by whether an object or person has a name or not , and by the belief system according to which the world has.
