    Chronology of Alexander the Great356 BC - 339 BCBorn July 20, 356 BC in Pella Macedonia, Alexander the Great, conqueror of the Persian Empire and king of Macedonia, is one of the most famous men in history and is considered one of the greatest military prodigies of all time (History of Macedonia, 2013). Alexander was the son of King Philip II of Macedon, Queen Olympus and the brother of Cleopatra. Alexander rarely saw his father growing up as he was heavily involved in long military crusades. His father managed to transform Macedonia into a military power, although his absence caused deep resentment on the part of Alexander (Encyclopedia of World Biography, 2015). When Alexander was 16, King Philip II gathered a great people. The Egyptians welcomed him as their savior from Persian control. Alexander respected Egyptian customs, religions and people (Encyclopedia of World Biography, 2015). As a result, they considered him a God and founded the city of Alexandria, which became a center of Greek culture and commerce. Later that year, Alexander defeated the Persians at the Battle of Gaugamela. For the third time, the Persian army gave in and Darius fled (History of Macedonia, 2013). Instead of pursuing Darius, Alexander set out to explore and during this time, Alexander became "the king of Babylon, the king of Asia, and the king of the four-quarters of the world." (Biography.com Publishers, 2015). He burned the capital of the Persian Empire, Persepolis, to prevent a war. Alexander founded the city of Alexandria-Aeschata on the Iaxartes River, demolished the city of Cyropolis and subdued the Scythians. In 328 BC, Alexander assassinated Callisthenes and Cleitus, Macedonian troops, for plotting against Alexander's life (Grant, 2011). In 327 BC, Alexander continued east towards Iran. He dominated the region, built cities and established Macedonian colonies (Encyclopedia of World Biography, 2015). He then seizes the fortress of Ariamazes and apprehends prince Oxyartes. He then married Rhoxana, the daughter of Oxyartes (Encyclopedia of World Biography, 2015).
